What Are The Different Grades of Stainless Steel?
There are 5 Families of Stainless Steel Types
Just as there are many types of aluminum, depending on the metals alloyed with it, so too there are different types of stainless steel, each appropriate for different applications. Here's how those families break down.

Ferritic - similar to carbon steel, this type contains 10.5-27% chromium and very little nickel. Not used for welded applications

Austenitic - almost 2/3rd of all stainless steel is in this category. Great for welding and non-magnetic, used in structures and storage vessels.

Martensitic - a straight chromium alloy that can be hardened and heat treated. Excellent for use in knives, turbines, and tools.

Duplex - difficult to weld, but resistant to stress corrosion cracking. Used in chemical processing, pipelines and large storage applications.

Precipitation Hardening - high strength from heat treatment, these metals are used for gears, engine components, and nuclear waste casks.
