The Stainless Steel Advantage
Why Is Stainless Steel Such a Durable & Affordable Metal?

Stainless steel's characteristics make it a key material for much of the world's building. The most obvious of these valuable characteristics is a resistance to corrosion. By resisting rust, stainless steel is applicable is a huge range of applications, including those in conditions where the elements wreak havoc on lesser metals. In addition to corrosion security, stainless steel's beneficial properties include:

  • High temperature resistance
  • Excellent machineability
  • Highly variable strain resistances
  • Cleanability comparable to glass
  • Low magnetism
  • Highly resistant to staining
  • Colour

Variable, from silver, to gold, gun metal and copper.
  • Structure

Austenitic stainless steels: face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure.
  • Ductility

    Good ductility, between 60-70%.
  • Malleability

    Less malleable that carbon steel.
  • Thermal Expansion

From 5 to 9 roughly, depending on the alloy.
  • Conductivity

Much lower than carbon steel. About 15 W/m⋅K.
  • Corrosion

    Extremely resistant to corrosion.
  • Density

Approximately 7,500kg/m3, depending on the alloy.
  • Melting Point

    Between 2550 and 2790°F (1400-1530°C)
  • Boiling Point

    3080 K
